1st Commission Mtg of 2010
2/18/2010 - 12/31/2010

On February 2, 2010, the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission gathered in Little Rock for its first meeting of the year. Commission officers elected for 2010 are as follows:
Mark Karnes - Chair
Ann Cornwell - Vice-chair
Curtis Adams, Jr. - Secretary
After the business meeting, commissioners joined staff for a field trip to
Lorance Creek Natural Area. The weather was cool and the boardwalk a bit icy, but the excursion was pleasant and informative. Chief of Stewardship Doug Fletcher led the group down the trail sharing the natural area’s history and pointing out interesting features along the way. Botanist Theo Witsell drew everyone’s attention to a patch of native grasses growing near the entrance sign and discussed where the seeds were collected.
Lorance Creek Natural Area is a mosaic of bald cypress-water tupelo swamps, beaver ponds, sandy washes overlain with groves of swamp black gum and Carolina ash, pine-oak flatwoods, and wooded seeps bordering upland oak and pine-oak forests.
