What is an herbarium?

An herbarium is a collection of dried plants mounted, labeled, and systematically arranged for use in scientific study. These specimens are organized in folders and stored in special cabinets (see photos at right) in a climate-controlled environment that protects them from moisture and insects. We now have more than 5,500 specimens in our herbarium and have been officially listed in the Index Herbariorium. Read the full article explaining what this accomplishment means to us here, and see a few more photos from our collection below.

Gentiana puberulenta (downy gentian). This is a plant species of conservation concern. Our herbarium is very important for tracking rare Arkansas native plants such as this.

Cypripedium kentuckiense (Kentucky lady's-slipper). This orchid is another species of conservation concern tracked by ANHC.

Asclepias perennis (swamp milkweed). Mounted specimen contains flowers, leaves, stem and roots.

Cypripedium parviflorum var. pubescens (southern large yellow lady's-slipper).
